What Does the Lens Size (mm) Mean in a CCTV Camera?
When a CCTV camera is described as 2.8mm, 5mm, 12mm, or 50mm, this refers to the lens size, which determines how wide or how zoomed-in the camera image will be.
Smaller lens numbers provide a wider field of view.
Larger lens numbers provide a narrower view with more zoom and detail at distance.

Common CCTV Lens Types Explained
2.8mm Lens – Wide Angle
A wide field of view that covers a large area. Ideal for entrances, backyards, car parks, and large indoor areas.
5mm Lens – Balanced View
A slightly narrower view compared to 2.8mm, providing better detail at medium distances while still maintaining good area coverage.
12mm Lens – Medium Zoom
A narrow field of view designed to capture more detail at longer distances. Recommended for driveways, gates, and access points.
50mm Lens – Long Zoom
A very narrow and focused field of view designed to monitor specific points at long distances with high detail. Commonly used for license plate recognition and specialised surveillance applications.
Which Lens Should I Choose?

What We Need From You
To ensure a smooth and hassle-free installation, please review the following before our team arrives:
Roof Cavity Access
Our installers require access to the internal roof cavity to run the camera cables.
If your property does not have a roof cavity, such as a flat roof or solid-wall construction, conduit may be required to protect and route the Ethernet cables.
A $180 surcharge per camera may apply to cover additional materials and installation time.
If you believe your property has a flat roof, our team will assess it during installation or during a prior site visit. Depending on the assessment, the final cost may vary.
Modem Location
Please ensure your internet modem is accessible on the same floor as the CCTV installation.
If this isn’t possible, we can provide a TP-Link bridge ($80) to connect your system wirelessly.
Once your order is placed, our team will contact you within one business day to schedule a convenient installation time.
Typical lead time: 1–3 business days.
